Two replacement estimates can look similar at first and still describe different projects. 1. How was the equipment size determined?

4. What installation work is included or excluded?

Ask the contractor to spell out removal of old equipment, thermostat work, any proposed refrigerant-line changes, and any electrical or drainage work involved. Clarify responsibility for permits when applicable. These are questions about your project's scope; every home will not need every item.

Request the total price, payment schedule, proposed work dates, and an explanation of how additional work would be approved. An unclear exclusion is easier to resolve before installation begins.

5. What checks and paperwork come with the installation?

Ask which startup checks will be performed and documented. For air conditioners and heat pumps, ENERGY STAR's comparison checklist recommends asking about refrigerant charge and airflow. Also request operating manuals and an explanation of the manufacturer's warranty and any contractor labor coverage, including conditions or registration steps.
