Spring is near, and with the welcome thawing of winter comes the same phone calls many heating and air conditioning contractors receive every year in Kentucky. “How much does it cost to fill up my air conditioner with that Freon?!” Such a vague and general question is difficult if not impossible for any heating and air conditioning contractor to answer over the phone. There are MANY factors that go into pricing refrigerant repairs including whether or not the leak needs to be located and repaired, what type of refrigerant your heating and air conditioning system takes, and how much refrigerant your system uses to operate properly. We would also like to educate consumers that Freon is a brand, Freeze-on is a vocabulary word that several customers have made up, and there are several different types of refrigerant that could be in your homes heating and air conditioning system depending upon the type it uses and if you have had a licensed contractor replace the refrigerant type with a different drop-in type refrigerant. The proper terms to use when discussing “freon” is refrigerant. Many contractors also receive phone calls asking for “used” refrigerant or recycled refrigerant in Eastern Kentucky. Many contractors who are not reputable in Kentucky, especially in the Big Sandy Region will sell “used” refrigerant. Selling used refrigerant is illegal under Federal Law as mandated by the E.P.A. “Used” refrigerant must be sent to a recycling center that is certified to recycle and reclaim refrigerant. Refrigerant must be returned to its “virgin” state before it is legal to resell again to the public. R-22 will be illegal to be resold period after 2020 under Federal Law. If you currently have an old R-22 system we recommend you replace it with a new system that contains the new R-410A refrigerant. We do not recommend the various “drop-in” refrigerant types as they are not approved by any of our major equipment manufacturers as acceptable.
